Jamalco is a joint venture between Century Aluminum (55% interest) and Clarendon Alumina Production Limited (CAP) (45% interest). The bauxite mining and alumina refining operation has grown over the years, but its first shipment of bauxite came in 1963, while the first shipment of alumina came in 1972. The original capacity of the refinery was 500,000 tonnes per year and it increased in capacity to 1,250,000 tonnes per year in 2003 and again in 2007, expanded to a capacity of over 1,400,000 tonnes per year.
Jamalco is known for the high-quality alumina it produces and has historically been a high performing facility on the global cost curve. Jamalco’s geographic footprint is well positioned to supply the Atlantic alumina market and provide Century its most critical upstream raw material. Alumina from Jamalco can be found in aluminum in many industries, including products sourced from Grundartangi’s low carbon aluminum, Natural-AlTM.
