Century’s wholly owned Mt. Holly aluminum smelter, located in Berkeley County, South Carolina, has a production capacity of approximately 229,000 metric tonnes of aluminum per year. Mt. Holly, which opened in 1980, is the most advanced plant of its kind in the United States, a pacesetter in production efficiency, energy utilization and environmental protection. The Mt. Holly plant proudly holds the title of the first primary aluminum plant in the world to be registered completely to the ISO 9001 Quality System Standard.
The smelter contains casting equipment used to cast molten aluminum into standard-grade ingot, HDC ingot, extrusion billet and other value-added primary aluminum products. Value-added primary aluminum products are sold at a premium to standard-grade primary aluminum.
The Mt. Holly plant has become an industry leader in production efficiency, energy utilization and environmental control, and proudly holds the title of the first primary aluminum plant in the world to be registered completely to the ISO 9001 Quality System Standard.
The Mt. Holly facility has a tremendous economic impact locally (Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties) and in the state. According to a 2015 study by the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina, at full operation Mt. Holly provides over 2,347 direct and indirect jobs with a state-wide economic impact of $977 million annually and a net fiscal impact to the state government of $13.5 million annually.
